Pollution Report (POLREP) #1
Site Description
At approximately 0830 hrs on April 10, 2008, a truck transporting Acetic Acid reportedly had a spill at Hillcrest and I-635, Dallas, TX.  UNIVAR contacted the National Response Center (NRC) at 0912 hrs.  The NRC assigned the incident # 867540.   UNIVAR reported that approximately 220 gallons of acetic acid had been released and that westbound I-635 was closed.

Current Activities
EPA dispatched OSC Chris Ruhl to the incident.  Upon Ruhl’s arrival, westbound I-635 continued to be closed.  UNIVAR representatives, their cleanup contractor (Hulcher Services), and Dallas Storm Water’s Cesar Cavazos were on site.  It was estimated that approximately 300 gallons of acetic acid had been released as there was approximately 30 gallons still in the transport container.  It was evident that the tote had started leaking previous to the trucks current location and that the majority of the acid had been spilled previously to the truck stopping.  Dallas’s Cavazos conducted a pH assessment of the area and determined that the spill was isolated to the pavement and immediately area adjacent to the freeway.  Cavazos indicated that he had directed UNIVAR excavate the contaminated soil and replace it with different soil.  Cavazos indicated that no additional EPA actions were necessary.  At approximately 1015 hrs 2 lanes of westbound I-635 were reopened.
