The Goodyear Dump site is located at 556 Buffalo Hollow in Berea, Rockcastle County, Kentucky (Latitude 37° 31’ 38” North and Longitude 84° 20’ 12” West). The site covers about 13 acres in a rural residential and undeveloped area. There are two residential properties on the Site, and 13 residential properties border the property.
EPA has contracted with ERRS and START contractors to begin the development of a Health and Saftey Plan for the removal process, RFPs will also be sent out to obtain a disposal contractor and landfill during the week of June 10, 2009.
Arsenic, PCB and lead levels were detected as high as 77ppm, 23 ppm and 23,000 ppm within soils at the Site. The presence of lead and PCBs in residential soils at concentrations that exceed EPA’s RALs indicate that a release of a hazardous substance, as defined in CERCLA section 101(14), has occurred at the Site. There is an estimated 1,700 cubic yards of contaminated soils which may require excavation and disposal.
Mobilization will begin the week of June 22, 2009.
EPA will continually coordinate with KYDEP during the removal and sampling process.
