Site Description
From January 6, 2004, until February 27th removal activities have been ongoing at the Smith Chemical site.  The site was demobilized pending waste disposal approval.  During the month of March, a PRP was on site to remove approximately 200 drums of waste.  On April 19, 2004, U.S. EPA remobilized the Emergency Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor, Earth Tech (ET), and the Superfund Technical Assistance and Response (START) contractor, Tetra Tech EM Inc., to complete removal activities at the site. All drums that were previously sampled, hazardous categorized, over-packed and segregated were properly labeled and transported off site for disposal.  All remaining hazardous waste was transported off site for disposal on May 6, 2004.  A final site walk through was conducted with representatives of the local health department, fire department, OEPA, and the property owner.

Current Activities
Monday, May 3rd, no on-site activities took place.  Awaiting disposal analytical results.

Tuesday, May 4th, the 30 cubic yard roll-off box of nonhazardous waste and PPE was shipped off site to American Landfill located in Waynesburg, Ohio.  Overpack drums were delivered to the site.  All remaining hazardous waste was overpacked in drums for transportation and disposal.

Wednesday, May 5th, 397 RCRA empty drums were shipped off site to Columbus Steel Drum Company in Columbus, Ohio for recycling.  Remaining hazardous waste drums were labeled for transportation and restaged in waste streams.

Thursday, May 6th, all remaining hazardous waste drums were shipped off site for disposal.  ERRS completed general site cleanup of remaining debris and decontaminated equipment in preparation for demobilization.

Friday, May 7th, ERRS demobilized the site forklift, generator, and portable latrines.  All remaing ERRS equipment was loaded for demobilization.  Utilities for the facility were disconnected.  Non-essential personnel were demobilized.

Monday, May 10th, temporary office trailer was demobilized from the site.  All remaining ERRS personnel and equipment were demobilized.

Planned Removal Actions
None.

Next Steps
ORC place a lien on the property for the sum of U.S. EPA's removal costs at this site.
