In October 2004, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) responded to an abandoned radioactive source at a vacant residence located near the intersection of Holmes and Red Bridge Roads in South Kansas City, Missouri. The radioactive source was characterized as Radium 226. It is thought that the radioactive source was once used in a Kansas City dermatology clinic in a form of radiation treatment therapy. During a remodeling job over 20 years ago, a former occupant of the residence brought the source to the vacant residence where it remained until it was recently discovered.
