At approximately 08:30 on 4/23/17 operators at a Georgia Pacific facility discovered a spill of 21,930 gallons of caustic soda (containing sodium hydroxide) at their facility in Brewton, Escambia County, Al. It was reported that the spill was contained in secondary containment (earthen berm). Updated information indicated an unknown amount of caustic material had been released from a compromised valve connected to the earthen berm containing the spill. Initial response operations included pumping the liquid out of the secondary containment with a small air powered pump. OSC Englert was dispatched to assess the spill.
