EPA has determined there is a significant possibility that hazardous substances contained within the Raymark Landfill are currently being released into groundwater, and due to geological feature known as Karst topography, there is a real possibility that the landfill is located on an incipient sink hole, which could lead to a substantial release of lead and asbestos into the regional aquifer that serves as a drinking source for several towns in the area. In order to determine the severity and magnitude of the ongoing release pathway, and to assess the possibility of a catastrophic sink hole formation, EPA is conducting an assessment which includes groundwater sampling and a series of geophysical surveys.
