A former C&D Landfill was disturbed during a residential neighborhood construction in 2016. In November of 2017 South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control identified bulk asbestos in bags on the ground and requested EPA's assistance with sampling. An emergency response was initiated, and several residential properties were sampled at that time. Although no asbestos was detected, the number of homes was limited and the spatial distribution scientifically inadequate to completely describe the risk threat. Based on a meeting with the neighborhood residents and the developer, EPA felt a complete assessment was warranted. EPA initiated a removal site evaluation.
