Brantley Recycling Center Fire, NRC # 1207625, Brantley, Crenshaw County, AL – At approximately 0400 local time, a large fire occurred at a recycling center in Brantley AL. The Recycling center is reported to house approximately 800,000 pounds of house hold plastics including items like milk jugs, drink bottles and commonly recycled plastics. Residents and businesses within a quarter mile of the fire have been evacuated and five separate fire departments are on the scene fighting the fire. Due to the moderate success of fire suppression efforts, the size of the fire, and the amount of plastic involved, local authorities believe the fire will burn at least for the duration of the day. Emergency Responders from Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) have mobilized to the fire. EPA Region 4 phone duty officer has found no downstream drinking water intakes that would be threatened from fire suppression runoff and has relayed available information to ADEM. EPA has mobilized an On Scene Coordinator and START contractors to provide air monitoring support and ensure response. For more information contact OSC Kevin Eichinger.
