At 1624 hours, Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) requested EPA assistance with a reported 400 gallon diesel fuel spill from drums at a private residence in the Docena Community. Earlier in the day, a fire occurred at the residence and the drums of diesel fuel that were stored in the basement of the house spilled. The firefighting water used to the extinguish the fire caused the fuel to discharge to the yard and impacted Village Creek which is a tributary of Bayview Lake. Docena is approximately 30 minutes outside of Birmingham. OSC Rick Jardine was deployed from the 35th Avenue Removal Site to provide assistance. OSC Jardine coordinated with ADEM to develop a plan for the assessment and removal. The property owner will excavate the contaminated soil under ADEM oversight. The local municipality will remove the contaminated spill cleanup material (absorbent booms and sand). EPA will also provide the local municipality and the fire department with information to seek reimbursement for the oil absorbent materials and the firefighting equipment contaminated during the response through the National Pollution Funds Center claim process. OSC Jardine demobilized back to the 35th Avenue Removal Site.
