On March 4, 2005, a residential home in Villa Hills, KY was assessed for mercury contamination as a follow up to a mercury cleanup at the Turkeyfoot Middle School (NRC No. 751594 and www.epaosc.net/turkeyfootmercury). Elevated levels of mercury were detected throughout the home. The Northern Kentucky Independent Health District and ATSDR recommended that resident vacate the premises until such time as the threats of continued mercury exposure are mitigated.

The EPA OSC initiated a fund-lead CERCLA time-critical removal action on March 8, 2005, upon receipt of a signed access agreement form the property owner.
An EPA Region 4 Community Involvement Coordinator (CIC) worked with the home owner to address relocation for the duration of the removal.

Cleanup activities began on Mar. 9, and were completed (except for final disposal of contaminated material) on March 14. The residents returned to their home the following day. EPA achieved health based clean up levels for mercury established in conjunction with the Agency for Toxic Substance Disease registry.
