On December 16, 2019, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) requested EPA assist with the recovery and disposal of several containers in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The drums are near Creve Coeur Lake and present a threat of discharge to Louisville Creek which flows approximately 2 miles to the Missouri River. Reconnaissance by MDNR identified one of the containers as leaking an oil material. That container was secured; however, the other containers were not accessible by land. The containers were reported to MDNR and are thought to have been displaced as a result of Spring and Summer 2019 flooding. In response to the report, the EPA Region 7 Duty Officer opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, or OSLTF, and Federal Project Number E20701 was assigned.
