At approximately 1549 on May 26, 2022, a Norfolk Southern train struck a heavy construction vehicle that was crossing the tracks around the 2400 block of Freeport Road, near the Allegheny Valley Joint Sewage Authority treatment plant. Of the total 225 railcars, the locomotive and 17 railcars derailed with several going into Guys Run, a tributary to the Allegheny River. Four railcars carrying petroleum distillate were confirmed to be releasing product on land and in Guys Run. There are plastic pellets and petroleum distillates in Guys Run. All cars have been removed from Guys Run. The location of derailment was on a bridge crossing Guys Run Creek, a tributary to the Allegheny River adjacent to Twelve Mile Island.
