EPA is creating the site’s Community Involvement Plan (CIP) to help the agency better understand the nearby community when considering implementing the cleanup and community needs. We want to hear from you!

Since area demographics, interests, and needs change over time, updating this plan will help us to better inform and engage with community members as the site’s cleanup progresses. All conversations remain confidential and are a great opportunity to not only educate EPA on your lived experience as a local resident, but to ask questions of the agency. Interviews last about 30 minutes to one hour and can be set up by contacting the site’s EPA Community Liaison, Lina Wu at wu.lina@epa.gov or 312-353-2886.

This week, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) started cleanup of hazardous substances from the former Omni Polymers facility at 1925 Nebraska Ave. in Toledo, Ohio. EPA estimates the work will be complete in spring 2026.

The property was operated from 2022 to 2024 by Omni Polymers International Corp. as a bulk plastic waste grinding and container reconditioning facility. On May 22, 2024, the city of Toledo requested EPA assistance to help evaluate environmental concerns due to unsecured hazardous materials on site.

Earlier this year, an EPA assessment of the site revealed around 2,300 containers, some potentially contaminated with elevated levels of cyanide, sulfide, arsenic, cadmium, and chromium. Cleanup will include identification of the contents in the containers, then consolidating, packaging and removing hazardous substances for off-site disposal. EPA will conduct air monitoring throughout the cleanup.
