On July 31, 2024, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) notified the EPA Region 7 through the National Response Center (NRC) of a displaced 55 gallon drum found floating in Lake Taneycomo. The area of Taney County was experiencing localized flooding due to recent rains.
MoDNR was initially notified of the abandoned drum and deployed a responder to investigate. One 55 gallon drum was removed from the lake and packaged for disposal. Markings on the drum indicated heptane was a key component and there was some additional manufacturer information on the drum as well. MoDNR staged the drum with MoDOT and contacted EPA for assistance with disposal.
On August 1, 2024, an EPA On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) mobilized contractors to prepare the drum for disposal. The contractors also attempted to contact a responsible party to retrieve the drum. The OSC was able get in contact with the responsible party to retrieve the drum for disposal.
On August 7, 2024, the drum was retrieved from MoDOT by a contract transporter for the responsible party. No additional removal activities are planned to address this site.
