The Washington County Lead District – Old Mines site is located in Washington County in the southeastern region of Missouri. The site is about 70 miles south of St. Louis and about 40 miles west of the Mississippi River.
The Removal Program at EPA Region 7 was referred a list of residential properties to address lead contamination in soil at levels between 200-399 parts per million (ppm). The NPL superfund site has a signed Record of Decision for remedial action, but it did not currently address residential properties with lead concentrations between 200 and 399ppm at the time of the referral. This Removal Action addressed four residential properties with sensitive populations referred to the EPA Region 7's Superfund Emergency Management Division in July 2024, due to the presence of lead between 200 and 399ppm and where a Missouri Department of Health and Human Service’s referral memo documented the presence of a child under the age of 7 with an elevated blood lead level (EBL) residing at the residence.
This removal action was performed on four residential properties between March 3, 2025 and July 2, 2025. It included the excavation and disposal of lead-contaminated soils to a nearby repository as well as sod restoration for 30 days. The actions taken followed procedures described in the
Site's Action Memo.
This removal action is complete and no further EPA actions are warranted at this time. All wastes have been disposed of and all qualified properties are restored.
