The Newton County Mine Tailings Superfund site, listed on the National Priorities List, encompasses all of Newton County, Missouri, where historical lead mining activities have impacted surface soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater.

A Time-Critical Removal Action is underway at the site to address surface soil lead contamination at residential properties referred to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The scope of the Removal Action includes excavation of contaminated soil, backfilling excavated areas to original grade with clean fill, and restoring the property to previous conditions. 

Work began on June 23, 2025, and is anticipated to continue through the summer.
