On April 17, 2006, Plantation Pipeline crews discovered a leak in a 12 inch pipeline transporting turbine fuel (primarily kerosene). The leak sprayed nearby homes and released an estimated 27,930 gallons of oil which travelled across several residential properties and into nearby Stony Run. The Pipeline Company mobilized cleanup contractors and initiated response activities which included excavating and repairing the leaking line, removing contaminated vegetation, containing and removing oil from the surface water, and sampling and characterizing the spill area. EPA also mobilized an On-Scene Coordinator which, along with local and State officials, directed and coordinated response activites conducted by the responsible party.
The spill location was west of Richmond Virgina in a residential neighborhood. Several homes were impacted and cleanup operations were performed on individual properies.. Detailed information is contained in attached polreps located in the Documents section of this page.
All cleanup activities were completed in May of 2010. The Administrative Order which required Kinder-Morgan to complete the necessary response actions was closed out on April 12, 2011.
