On October 9, 2008, OSC Ferguson responded to a request for assistance by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to assess an abandoned school chemistry lab located in Brookfield, Missouri. Distressed containers of flammable, corrosive, toxic, and reactive materials were observed in the laboratory stock room. Evidence of trespassing was observed in the room. Police found chemicals from the stock room in the possession of minors who reportedly trespassed on the property to obtain the chemicals. MDNR responders documented the identity and quantity of the materials abandoned in the lab. Numerous containers did not have labels on them and the composition of their contents is unknown. The property owners reside in the state of Maryland have stated they do not have adequate resources to clean-up the material. Therefore, to protect human health and the envrionment a removal action has been performed at the site.
