This site was a former lumber mill and pentachlorophenol (PCP) wood treating facility owned and operated by Arneson Timber Company (ATC). ATC ceased operations in 1983.
Operations at the site included the treatment of wood with PCP. Following treatment, the wood was stored on a concrete drip pad while it cured. Runoff, including PCP residues from the pad, would flow onto the soils surrounding the pad.
EPA conducted a number of investigations at the site from 1983 to 1996. These investigations indicated the presence of PCP-contaminated soils at the surface and subsurface at the site, in an area roughly 300 feet by 150 feet by 4 feet deep.
EPA entered into an Administrative Order on Consent (CERCLA-7-99-0006) with Arneson Timber and Charles Leezy in 1999 to perform cleanup and other actions related to the PCP contamination. Cleanup actions were largely completed by 2005, consisting primarily of onsite bioremediation. However, final institutional controls were not fully executed until October 2009.
