Cherokee County Fire Department contacted Phone Duty for assistance regarding a 2-acre brush fire that appeared to have spread into an illegal dumping ground containing tires. The fire is in a residential area in Canton, GA. OSC Nattis, START, and ERRS were deployed to assist with air monitoring, runoff control, and putting out the fire by separating the fuel sources with an excavator.


Day 1. EPA OSC Nattis and START contractors Tetra Tech first arrive on scene. Day 1. Cherokee County Fire Department keeping the flames down as well as lowering the airborne threats. However, this increases potential runoff hazards. Day 1. Unburned section of the burial area (east side) Day 1. Fire continues to burn. Notice the 30+ foot pile of debris. Day 1. Fire continues to burn as hot spots continue to flare up. At this point ERRS was mobilized to help remove the fuel sources (excavator) to assist the Cherokee County Fire Department in extinguishing the fire to prevent further run off and airborne particulate issues Day 1. Spent tires on top of the of burial site Day 1. Fire on the hill side continues to burn. At this point it is unknown whether the fire is superficial or subsurface Day 1.
