A west bound tanker truck carrying approximately 6500 gallons of bulk 5W-30 blends of oil rolled over into a ditch along I-20. Approximately 4,500 gallons of oil spilled from the tanker and entered an unnamed stream drains into Muddy Creek. Muddy Creek drains into Clean Creek and Clear Creek Drains into Big Black River which drains into the Mississippi River. Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MSDEQ) and a response contractor where on-scene during the off loading of the overturned tanker truck and overnight response clean-up operations. The truck was removed from the scene and boom was placed along the unnamed stream and in the creek. The site received over 6 inches of rain over the first 12 hours of the response. Most of the oil was lost in the creeks which extremely high and recovery from the creeks was challenging because of the extreme flow of the water. The RP meet with MSDEQ, the response contractor and EPA On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) and the RP has assumed responsibility for the clean-up of the oil. EPA issued a Notice of Federal Interest to the RP. MSDEQ will oversee the operations and maintenance (O&M) phase of the clean-up.
