2. Current Activities

2.1 Operations Section
|
|
|
|
2.1.1 Narrative
Seasonal demobilization operations were conducted during this reporting period. In addition, site preparations began in both SA5A and SA3A in anticipation of removal activities next construction season.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From October 15 to October 31, EPA, START and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - Axtell Creek, SA5D & SA5C
- Demobilized pumps, de-watering system, engineering & environmental controls and equipment from SA5C;
- Removed curb cuts and replaced damaged sections of sidewalks;
- Conducted post-construction site structural feature assessment; and
- Began site restoration activities in accordance with the site Restoration Plan.
Site Activities - SA5A
- Conducted pre-construction sampling and pre-removal contaminated sediment confirmation sampling in each grid;
- Staged bypass pump discharge pipes on east bank for the winter to save time and re-mobilization costs; and
- Removed trees, brush and fencing from creek banks in preparation for removal operations next year.
Site Activities - SA3A
- Conducted pre-removal contaminated sediment confirmation sampling;
- Constructed an aggregate access road and staging area for equipment and load-out pad; and
- Removed trees and brush from creek banks in preparation for removal operations next year.
Site Activities - Staging Pad
- Solidified and loaded out 1205.32 tons of non-TSCA (< 50ppm PCBs) contaminated sediments for disposal at C&C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan;
- Treated 42,344 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, with a total of 695,715 gallons treated to date;
- Shut down EPA's mobile waste water treatment plant for the season and demobilized support trailer; and
- Pumped out and transport 10,000 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water from the staging pad sump for treatment off site.
Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo;
- Conducted data validation for additional post-removal confirmation sediment samples collected from SA5C&D;
- Continued discussions with property owners in SA5A, SA3A, SA1C and SA1B regarding site access, preparation and restoration; and
- Completed implementation of seasonal site shut-down / demobilization plan;

2.2 Planning Section

A summary of removal activities that will take place from October 31 through the end of the year include:
Site Activities - Staging Pad
- Continue to pump out and transport potentially contaminated contact water from the staging pad sump for treatment off site on an as-needed basis.
Site Activities - Axtell Creek, SA5D & SA5C
- Complete restoration activies according to site Restoration Plan.
Project Management Activities
- Conduct data validation for pre-removal confirmation core sampling conducted in SA5A & SA3A as well as post-construction sampling in SA5D;
- Review Post-Removal Structure Feature Assessment rep[ort for Axtell Creek, SA5D & SA5C;
- Obtain access agreements for properties in SA5A, SA3A, SA1C and SA1B; and
- Plan for removal opeations in SA5A, SA3A, SA1C and SA1B during the next construction season.
