2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
The following actions took place during this reporting:
  • ERRS continued to pump out the ASTs on site.  During this reporting period and additional 33,107 gallons were pumped and sent offsite for disposal.  This brings the total amount of flowable materials from the ASTs pumped to date to 93,150 gallons.
  • Calculations on the amount of non-flowable sludge remaining in the tanks are around 25,000 gallons.  Solidification on some of the sludges began during the week of 1/5/2011.  To solidify the material ERRS is using a material called cotton-trash which is an oil-philic organic product that remains after cotton has been harvested.  To date, 4,900 gallons of sludges have been solidified using this product.
  • Nine more ASTs were demolished and 5 rolloff boxes of scrap were sent to a metal recycling facility.
  • The former glycol recycler boiler was demolished on 12/20/10 and the oil from the boiler was mixed with the cotton trash.
  • START continued to monitor the air in the vicinity of the tanks and prepare samples for disposal of the solidified materials.
  • No work took place on site from 12/22/10 - 1/3/10 due to scheduled time off for the Holidays.

  2.2 Planning Section
    2.2.1 Anticipated Activities

    2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities

During the next reporting period ERRS will continue to work on demolishing the ASTs and solidifying all non-flowable sludges.

    2.2.1.2 Next Steps

Once demolition is complete and disposal of sludges has occurred, the Site will be sampled for any soil contamination that may have occurred during the cleanup and any contaminated soil removed.

2.2.2 Issues

Temperature continues to be an issue.  As the temperature drops some of the sludgy materials in the ASTs has become harder to pump.  Also, the shears used to cut the tanks have gone down twice during this reporting period causing a delay in the demolition process.
