2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
The crew re-mobilized to the site to begin preparations for dredging operations in SA5A, SA3A and SA1B&C, which are scheduled to be completed this construction season. Work activities focused on establishing engineering controls to isolate the creek between Dutton Street and Walnut Street in preparation for the start of dredging operations on April 8.  In addition, clearing and grubbing activities to create access and establish staging areas continued in SA3A and SA1B&C.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From February 26 to March 29, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:

Site Activities - Staging Pad
- Mobilized support equipment;
- Set up mobile waste water treatment plant; and
- Mobilize heavy equipment & materials to support contaminated sediment staging and load out operations.

Site Activities - SA5A
- Located utilities throughout construction area;
- Closed hospital staff parking lot and Dutton Street bridge to vehicular traffic to establish staging area;
- Established, constructed and secured equipment & material staging area;
- Installed sheet pile coffer dams;
- Installed creek bypass pumping system;
- Installed ground water dewatering system; and
- Constructed access along creekbank to support dredging equipment & contaminated sediment load out.

Site Activities - SA3A
- Located utilities in vicinity of anticipated sheet pile coffer dam installation and soil boring locations;
- Characterized sub-surface soils along abandoned railroad right-of-way bisecting property via 2 soil borings;
- Completed additional clearing & grubbing activities in staging and support areas;
- Completed limited grading activities to establish bypass pump staging pad and support vehicle access; and
- Removed 6 truckloads of surface debris resulting from grading activities for disposal.

Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C
- Completed clearing & grubbing activities to facilitate access to dredging areas; and
- Re-secured lot access in SA1C on east and west banks.

Project Management Activities
- Received approval of closure plan for the Dutton Street bridge (SA5A) from the City of Kalamazoo;
- Resumed weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo and affected private property owners;
- Conducted pre-construction activity roadway inspections in SA5A & SA3A; 
- Began development of area-specific restoration plans in SA5A, SA3A, SA1B & SA1C;
- Conducted pre-construction work area sampling in SA5A & SA3A;
- Obtained access agreement from remaining property owner in SA3A;
- Continued discussions with property owners in SA1C, SA1B and SA1A on consent for property access;
- Completed draft SA3A Technical memorandum and shared with affected property owners for input; and
- Finalized revisions to QAPP, SA5/Axtell Creek Technical Memorandum and Traffic Control Plan.

  2.2 Planning Section
    A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from March 29 to April 12 include:
 
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Begin treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Remove gravel, grade and seed access roadways on south and east ends of staging pad;
- Remove aggregate stockpiles for use in SA5A backfilling operations; and
- Receive contaminated sediments from SA5A dredging operations and load out for disposal.

Site Activities - SA5A
- Maintain engineering controls and water control systems around excavation area;
- Mobilize specialized excavation equipment and GPS control system to support dredging operations;
- Begin contaminated sediment dredging operations in grids SA5A-1 to SA5A-4; and
- Load out contaminated sediments and transport to John Street staging pad for transfer to long haul trucks to landfill.

Site Activities - SA3A
- Continue staging area preparation on north and south banks of creek; and
- Establish access control at north and south staging area entrance/exits.

Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Conduct pre-construction sampling in SA1B & C;
- Conduct pre-construction surveying and benchmark placement in SA5A, SA3A, SA1B&C;
- Continue development of area specific restoration plans in SA5A, SA3A, SA1B & SA1C;
- Obtain access agreements from remaining property owners in SA1B, SA1C & SA1A;
- Incorporate comments from property owners on draft SA3A Technical memorandum;
- Establish perimeter dust monitoring system in SA5A;
- Evaluate restoration work conduct in 2012 to determine if any re-plantings, etc are required;
- Continue planning for removal operations in SA3A, SA1C & SA1B.
