2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
Backfilling operations were completed in SA5A. Contaminated sediments removed from SA5A were loaded out and hauled to approved disposal facilities. Preparations for contaminated sediment removal operations were completed in SA3A. Excavation will begin after Memorial Day.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From May 11 to May 23, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:

Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Solidified and loaded out 587.31 tons of TSCA (> 50ppm PCBs) contaminated sediments for disposal at Wayne Disposal landfill in Belleville, Michigan;
- Solidified and loaded out 504.19 tons of non-TSCA (< 50ppm PCBs) contaminated sediments for disposal at C&C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan;
- Completed repairs on EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant; and
- Continued work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA5A
- Dismantled and demobilized all engineering controls and water control systems around excavation area;
- Conducted post-construction soil sampling in staging area;
- Re-opened Dutton Street bridge to vehicle traffic; and
- Initiated temporary restoration activities.

Site Activities - SA3A
- Mobilized pumps and completed construction of creekwater bypass pumping system;
- Constructed additional perimeter fencing and site engineering controls;
- Installed sheet pile coffer dams; and
- Installed and started up isolation (groundwater) dewatering system.

Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Began mobilizing discharge piping for construction of bypass pumping system.

Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Completed draft area specific restoration plan for SA5A and shared with property owners for approval;
- Continued development of draft area specific restoration plans in SA3A, SA1B & SA1C; and
- Continued development of draft Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1B & SA1C.

  2.2 Planning Section
    A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from May 25 to June 7 include:
 
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant; and
- Receive excavated sediments from SA3.

Site Activities - SA5A
- Re-install permanent fencing around excavation area; and
- Complete temporary restoration activities pending approval of restoration plan.

Site Activities - SA3A
- Maintain engineering and environmental monitoring/controls around excavation area;
- Excavate and backfill floodplain area (grid #SA3A-3); and
- Continue stockpiling backfill materials.

Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C
- Begin construction of bypass pump system discharge pipelines.

Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Continue development of area specific restoration plans in SA3A, SA1B & SA1C;
- Review pre-sediment removal structure feature assessment report for SA1B, SA1C & SA1A;
- Obtain consent to access from remaining property owners in SA1A; and
- Continue planning for removal operations in SA1C & SA1B.

2.2.2 Issues
Heavy rainfall resulting in flood conditions within the SA5A excavation area delayed removal and backfill activities. Weather-related delays are resulting in elevated fuel costs in both creek bypass and isolation (ground water) de-watering pump systems.
