2. Current Activities

2.1 Operations Section

2.1.1 Narrative
Contaminated sediment removal and backfilling operations were completed in SA3A, and demobilization of equipment, materials and supplies to SA1C commenced. Preparations are underway for contaminated sediment removal operations in SA1C & SA1B.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From June 8 to June 21, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 22,412 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 937,561 gallons treated to date;
- Received contaminated sediments excavated from SA3A;
- Loaded out 2395.60 tons of contaminated sediments for transport & disposal at approved landfill facilities; and
- Continued work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA5A
- Awaiting property owner approval before implementing site specific restoration plan.
Site Activities - SA3A
- Completed contaminated sediment dredging operations in grids SA3A-7 to SA3A-8;
- Loaded out contaminated sediments and transported to John Street staging pad;
- Completed backfilling in grids SA3A-7 to SA3A-8 according to Restoration Plan;
- Commenced demobilization of equipment, materials and supplies to SA1C staging area; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Began mobilizing equipment, supplies and materials to staging area;
- Began construction of isolation de-watering (groundwater) system; and
- Began construction of creekwater bypass pumping system.
Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Obtained approval of draft area specific restoration plan for SA3A;
- Continued discussions with property owners regarding consent to access in SA1A; and
- Continued finalizing Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1B & SA1C.

A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from June 22 to July 8 include:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant.
Site Activities - SA3A
- Demobilize remaining equipment, materials and supplies to SA1C staging area.
Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C
- Complete construction of creekwater bypass pumping system;
- Begin installation of sheet pile coffer dams to isolate excavation area;
- Complete construction of isolation de-watering (ground water extraction) system;
- Initiate creekwater bypass pumping and isolation de-watering in preparation for contaminated sediment excavation activities; and
- Begin receiving and stockpiling backfill aggregates.
Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Continue development of area specific restoration plan for SA1B & SA1C;
- Finalize Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1B & SA1C and share with property owners;
- Obtain approval of area specific restoration plan for SA5A and begin restoration work (planting) if possible;
- Finalize area specific restoration plan for SA3A in consultation with property owners; and
- Obtain consent to access from remaining property owners in SA1A.

2.5.1 Safety Officer
Craig Thomas, Paul Ruesch and Andrew Maguire serve as safety officer(s). The HASP is reviewed and signed by all site personnel. All new personnel, including sub-contractors, are provided a site orientation and safety briefing. Safety meetings are held each morning with all site workers.
Staff from the Federal Occupational Health regional office performed a safety audit of the site on May 19. No significant issues were identified.
