2. Current Activities

2.1 Operations Section

2.1.1 Narrative
All equipment, materials and supplies were demobilized from SA3A to SA1C & SA1B. Preparations continued for contaminated sediment removal operations in SA1C & SA1B, which are expected to begin the week of July 15.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From June 22 to July 8, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 33,026 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 970,587 gallons treated to date.
Site Activities - SA3A
- Removed all remaining equipment, supplies and materials from area;
- Removed access roadways and performed limited site grading in preparation for restoration activities; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Mobilized all equipment, supplies and materials to staging areas;
- Completed construction of creekwater bypass pumping system; and
- Completed construction of isolation de-watering (ground water extraction) system.
Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Finalized area specific restoration plan and implementation agreement for SA3A in coordination with property owners;
- Obtained additional access agreements for properties in SA1A & SA1B;
- Solicited bids for clearing and grubbing activities in SA1A & SA1B; and
- Completed Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1B & SA1C (posted to document section of website).

2.2 Planning Section

|
A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from July 9 to July 19 include:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Receive contaminated sediment removed from SA1C; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA3A
- Conduct post-construction soil sampling in all work / staging areas.
Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C
- Complete installation of sheet pile coffer dams to isolate excavation area;
- Start-up creekwater bypass and isolation dewatering (ground water extraction) pump systems;
- Finalize preparations for contaminated sediment removal operations;
- Begin receiving and stockpiling of aggregates for creek channel backfill;
- Commence excavation of contaminated sediments from grids SA1C-1 & SA1C-2; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Continue development of area specific restoration plans for SA1B, SA1C & SA1A;
- Begin development of Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1A;
- Coordinate with Kalamazoo County & Kalamazoo Sunrise Rotary regarding planned work activities in Veteran's Park to support anticipated SA1A removal operations;
- Obtain approval of area specific restoration plan for SA5A and begin restoration work (planting) if possible; and
- Obtain consent to access from remaining property owner in SA1A.

Initially, the overall schedule contemplated excavation of contaminated sediments in SA1A (Portage Creek confluence with Kalamazoo River) during the 2014 construction season. However, if weather conditions remain favorable and other potentially mitigating factors are resolved, excavation of SA1A will be completed in the 2013 construction season.
