2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
Contaminated sediment removal was completed in SA1C, grids 1-4 (creek channel).  It is anticipated that removal and backfilling operations will be completed in SA1C and SA1B in the next two weeks.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From July 9 to July 19, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:

Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 21,076 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 991,663 gallons treated to date;
- Received contaminated sediments excavated from SA1C; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Installed upstream & downstream coffer dams to isolate excavation area;
- Completed contaminated sediment dredging operations in grids SA1C-1 to SA1C-4;
- Loaded out excavated sediments and transported to John Street staging pad;
- Began backfilling in grids SA1C-1 to SA1C-4 according to Restoration Plan;
- Began preparations for excavation of grids SA1C-5 and SA1B-4; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Met with City of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Sunrise Rotary and the Friends of the Kalamazoo River Trailway regarding planning for SA1A operations;
- Completed Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1A (posted to document section of website);
- Obtained remaining access agreements for properties in SA1A; and
- Solicited bids, awarded and began Indiana Bat presence/absence survey in SA1B and SA1A in coordination with U.S. FWS.

  2.2 Planning Section
    A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from July 20 to August 2 include:
 
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Receive contaminated sediment removed from SA1C and SA1B;
- Load out contaminated sediment for transport and disposal at approved landfill facilities; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C
 
- Complete excavation of contaminated sediments in grid SA1C-5 (floodplain along west bank) & SA1B-4;
- Complete backfill of all excavated grids;
- Begin demobilization of all equipment, materials and supplies to SA1B and SA1A staging areas; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA1A
- Begin clearing & grubbing activities pending outcome of Indiana Bat presence/absence survey;
- Begin construction of staging area; and
- Begin preparations for installation of isolation dewatering (groundwater) system.

Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Finalize area specific restoration plan for SA1B & SA1C;
- Amend Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1C & SA1B;
- Continue development of area specific restoration plan for SA1A;
- Continue coordination with stakeholders regarding closure of Kalamazoo Valley River Trailway and portions of Veteran's Park in SA1A; and
- Obtain approval of area specific restoration plan for SA5A and begin restoration work (planting) if possible.

Site tours were provided to groups from Grand Valley State University (July 8) and Western Michigan University (July 9). Approximately 70 students, teachers and technical staff from the universities participated in the tours.
