2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
Contaminated sediment removal and backfilling operations were completed in SA1C&B. Mobilization of equipment, supplies and materials along with limited site preparations began in SA1A.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From July 20 to August 2, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:

Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 45,987 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 1,037,650 gallons treated to date;
- Received contaminated sediments excavated from SA1C&B;
- Loaded out approximately 1982.23 tons of non-TSCA contaminated sediments for transport and disposal to approved landfill facilities; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA1A
- Removed existing ornamental vegetation in SA1A staging area;
- Eradicated Japanese Knotweed colony on west bank; and
- Began construction of SA1A staging area;

Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Completed contaminated sediment removal operations in grids SA1C-5 (floodplain);
- Completed contaminated sediment dredging operations in SA1B-4;
- Loaded out excavated sediments and transported to John Street staging pad;
- Backfilled grids SA1C-5 and SA1B-4 according to Restoration Plan;
- Began removing equipment, materials and supplies from staging area; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Posted signage indicating pending trail closure along Kalamazoo River Valley Trail adjacent to SA1A;
- Conducted pre-construction sampling in the SA1A staging area;
- Conducted post-construction topographic surveys in SA5A and SA3A;
- Coordinated with Consumer's Energy for temporary removal or relocation of electrical infrastructure necessary for accessing SA1B and SA1A;
- Coordinated with Michigan DOT regarding access to Veteran's Park from Michigan Avenue for heavy equipment;
- Coordinated with the City of Kalamazoo Parks & Recreation Department, Kalamazoo County, and Sunrise Rotary regarding temporary removal of ornamental plants in Veteran's Park;
- Completed amended Technical Memo for dredging operations in SA1B&C (posted to website); and
- Reviewed findings from Indiana Bat presence/absence survey in SA1B & SA1A in coordination with U.S. FWS.

  2.2 Planning Section
    A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from August 3 to August 16 include:
 
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Load out TSCA contaminated sediments for transport and disposal at approved landfill facilities; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

Site Activities - SA1A
- Conduct clearing & grubbing of vegetation on east and west banks;
- Complete construction and securing of staging area;
- Begin installation of isolation (groundwater) de-watering system; and
- Begin installation of creek bypass pump system.

Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C 
- Demobilize all equipment, materials and supplies to SA1A or SA1B staging areas; and
- Conduct temporary restoration activities according to Restoration Plan.

Project Management Activities

- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Finalize area specific restoration plans for SA1B & SA1C;
- Begin development of area specific restoration plan for SA1A;
- Conduct post-construction sampling of staging area in SA1C; and
- Post trail detour signage and close riverfront trail and portions of Veteran's Park in SA1A.
