2. Current Activities

2.1 Operations Section

2.1.1 Narrative
Preparations are underway in SA1A for contaminated sediment removal operations, which are anticipated to begin in early September.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From August 3 to August 16, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 37,718 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 1,075,368 gallons treated to date;
- Loaded out 144.15 tons of TSCA contaminated sediments for transport and disposal to approved landfill facilities; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Completed construction and securing of staging areas;
- Conducted clearing & grubbing of trees & vegetation on east and west banks; and
- Began installation of creek bypass pump system.
- Began construction of engineering and erosion controls around excavation area.
Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Demobilized all equipment, materials and supplies to SA1A or SA1B staging areas;
- Removed temporary roadways in staging area; and
- Conducted temporary restoration activities according to Restoration Plan.
Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly updates with City of Kalamazoo and property owners upon request;
- Posted signage closing trail indicating detour along Kalamazoo River Valley Trail adjacent to SA1A;
- Closed off western portion of Rose Park, removed limited vegetation, and temporarily removed electrical infrastructure & boardwalk in work area;
- Received concurrence from U.S. FWS on Indiana Bat survey findings (confirmed absence of species in SA1A);
- Finalized area specific restoration plan for SA1B & SA1C; and
- Began development of area specific restoration plan for SA1A; and

A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from August 17 to August 29 include:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Complete construction of isolation (groundwater) de-watering system;
- Complete construction of creekwater bypass pumping system;
- Complete installation of sheet pile coffer dam to isolate excavation grids; and
- Complete construction of engineering and erosion controls around excavation area.
Site Activities - SA1B & SA1C
- Complete restoration activities on east bank of creek; and
- Conduct post-excavation survey of creek channel.
Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Finalize area specific restoration plan for SA1B&C;
- Conduct post-construction sampling in SA1B&C staging areas;
- Conduct post-excavation survey in SA1B&C creek channel;
- Conduct post-construction engineered features survey in SA5A and SA3A.
- Continue development of area specific restoration plan for SA1A.
