2.1 Operations Section

2.1.1 Narrative
Final preparations continued in SA1A for contaminated sediment removal operations, which are anticipated to begin in mid-September.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From August 17 to August 30, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 11,308 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 1,086,676 gallons treated to date;
- Loaded out 118.14 tons of non-TSCA contaminated sediments for transport and disposal to approved landfill facility; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA5C
- Place additional topsoil, seed & straw in Upjohn Park between Crosstown Parkway and Vine Street to fill in a low spot where standing water was accumulating after heavy rainfall.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Completed construction of downstream sheet pile coffer dam to isolate excavation area;
- Completed construction of isolation dewatering (groundwater) system; and
- Completed construction of creek bypass pumping system.
Site Activities - SA1B&C
- Completed restoration activities on east bank;
- Replaced fencing removed to facilitate equipment access;
- Removed temporary fencing from 645 E. Michigan Avenue lot;
- Completed removal of all equipment, materials and supplies from staging area;
- Removed temporary rock roads in staging area; and
- Graded, seeded and placed straw in staging area.
Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Finalized draft of area specific restoration plans for SA1A and shared with property owners;
- Conducted post-construction topographic survey in SA1B&C; and
- Conducted post-sediment removal structure feature assessment in SA5A and SA3A and reviewed reports.

A summary of removal activities that are anticipated to take place from August 31 to September 13 include:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Receive contaminated sediments excavated from SA1A; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Maintain operation of creekwater bypass and isolation dewatering (ground water extraction) pump systems;
- Finalize preparations for contaminated sediment removal operations;
- Commence excavation of contaminated sediments from grids SA1A-1 to SA1A-4;
- Solidify and load out contaminated sediments for transport to John Street staging pad;
- Begin receiving and stockpiling of aggregates for creek channel backfill;
- Remove tree stumps from east bank of creek in Rose Park; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Finalize area specific restoration plans in SA1A;
- Begin development of removal plan for John Street staging pad; and
- Develop dismantlement plan for EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant.
