2.1 Operations Section

2.1.1 Narrative
Excavation of contaminated sediments is underway in SA1A, with excavation completed in grids SA1A-1 & 2. Weather permitting, it is anticipated that excavation and backfilling of SA1A could be completed by the end of the month.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From August 31 to September 13, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 8,908 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 1,095,584 gallons treated to date;
- Received contaminated sediments excavated from SA1A;
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Excavated contaminated sediments from grids SA1A-1 and SA1A-2;
- Completed backfilling of base layer in grids SA1A-1 and SA1A-2;
- Received and stockpiled aggregrates to support backfilling operations;
- Loaded out contaminated sediments for transport to John Street staging area; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.

- Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Established alternative parking area for flag retirement event scheduled in Rose Park for September 14;
- Solicited quote for replacement of removed sections of KRVT boardwalk behind Rose Park;

Removal activities anticipated to take place from September 14 to September 27 include the following:

- Continue treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Receive contaminated sediments excavated from SA1A;
- Begin load out and transfer of contaminated sediments to approved disposal facilities; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Complete excavation of contaminated sediments from grids SA1A-3 to SA1A-9;
- Receive and stockpile aggregates for support backfilling operations;
- Backfill excavated grids SA1A-3 to SA1A-9 with rock according to Restoration Plan;
- Solidify and load out contaminated sediments for transport to John Street staging pad; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Continue weekly landscaping maintenance & irrigation in Rose Park; and
- Finalize site specific restoration plans for SA1A and bypass pump staging pad in SA1B.
