2. Current Activities

2.1 Operations Section

|
2.1.1 Narrative
Backfilling and re-construction of the creek channel and banks was completed in SA1A. All equipment, supplies and materials are being demobilized from SA1A and SA1B support areas. Contaminated sediments excavated from SA1A have been shipped for disposal to an approved facility.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
From September 28 to October 11, EPA and ERRS contractors conducted the following activities:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Treated 14,321 gallons of potentially contaminated contact water in EPA's mobile wastewater treatment plant, for a total of 1,120,456 gallons treated to date;
- Loaded out 2,262 tons of TSCA-contaminated sediments for transport & disposal at an approved landfill facility;
- Received, decontaminated, wipe sampled and demobilized heavy equipment; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Received and stockpiled aggregrates to support backfilling operations;
- Completed final backfilling of grids SA1A-1 to SA1A-9 according to Restoration Plan;
- Removed and demobilized isolation (groundwater) dewatering system;
- Removed and demobilized upstream and downstream sheet pile coffer dams;
- Conducted bank stabilization, restoration and temporary seeding;
- Began removing staging and support area equipment, materials and supplies; and
- Conducted work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1B
- Removed and demobilized creek bypass pumps
- Began demobilizing staging and support area equipment, materials and supplies; and
- Began re-construction, stabilization, restoration and temporary seeding of area.
Project Management Activities
- Continued weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Conducted landscaping maintenance & irrigation in Rose Park;
- Finalized plans for temporary restoration of John Street staging pad in coordination with property owners;
- Finalized plans to re-construct sections of KRVT boardwalk removed for bypass pumping system;
- Finalized plans for re-opening of KRVT closed due to project in late October;
- Finalized plan for restoration of SA1C (west bank) with property owner;
- Finalized development of site specific restoration plans for SA1A; and
- Continued development of project final report.

Removal activities anticipated to take place from October 12 to October 25 include the following:
Site Activities - John Street Staging Area
- Complete treatment of contact water from the staging pad sump with mobile wastewater treatment plant;
- Decontaminate, wipe sample and demobilize remaining heavy equipment;
- Conduct post-construction soil sampling in staging and support areas;
- Remove 'trucks entering highway' signs from Crosstown Parkway;
- Remove staging pad for disposal at approved landfill facility and re-grade area;
- Prepare for demobilization of trailers and offices; and
- Conduct work area perimeter air monitoring for dust.
Site Activities - SA1A
- Remove remaining equipment from staging area(s);
- Remove and cut bypass pump system piping from Rose Park and ship back to vendor;
- Re-construct KRVT decking on boardwalk removed for bypass pump system piping;
- Replace light post removed from Rose Park removed for bypass pump system piping;
- Conduct post-construction sampling in staging and support areas;
- Remove all fencing and rock from staging area(s); and
- Complete temporary restoration and seeding of staging area(s).
Site Activities - SA1B
- Remove remaining equipment from staging area;
- Restore creek bank used for bypass pumping system pump pad.
- Remove temporary fencing; and
- Complete temporary restoration and seeding of staging area.
Project Management Activities
- Continue weekly progress meetings with City of Kalamazoo, including property owners upon request;
- Continue weekly landscaping maintenance & irrigation in Rose Park;
- Conduct post-construction structure features assessment in SA1;
- Identify all damaged sidewalk and pavement damages due to project activities and solicit bids for repairs; and
- Solicit bids for final restoration work according to area-specific restoration plans in SA1.

2.7 Information Officer
A site tour & interview was provided to a reporter and photographer from Connect, a monthly television show on the Public Media Network on October 1. A 1 hour presentation on the project was provided to 25 students of the Michigan Conservation Stewards Program at the Kalamazoo Nature Center on October 3. A telephone interview was provided to Michigan Public Radio (October 7).
