2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
The objective of the project was to convert the existing passive trench and vertical well vent system to an active gas extraction system to mitigate threats posed by methane gas migration at the site.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
Work activities for the project were completed on March 7, 2012. The following activities were completed during the last reporting period:

- Electrical power lines were run from the wastewater treatment plan to equipment sheds in Areas 1 & 2;
- All trenches and excavations made for valve housings were backfilled;
- Heavy duty electrical transformers were purchased and installed at the equipment sheds in Areas 1 & 2;
- All perimeter fencing impacted during the project was repaired/replaced;
- All electrical connections were made to the power sources and the equipment sheds; and
- System start-up and testing was conducted to ensure that required vacuum was obtained at all extraction wells.

Other than technical assistance, no additional field activities by EPA are anticipated. An Operations, Maintenance and Monitoring Plan is under developed by a consultant to the City of Mount Clemens.  The consultant will assist in monitoring the system.

2.2.1.2 Next Steps

A Post Removal Site Control letter was sent to EPA by the City of Mount Clemens to operate, monitor and maintain the system on January 30, 2012.  An Operations, Maintenance and Monitoring Plan is under development to ensure the proper operation and continued care of the system.  The City will follow this plan in the future to ensure that the system is operating properly and controlling methane migration off site.

The City of Mount Clemens Department of Public Services Director served as information officer for the project.  A fact sheet was developed for the community and distributed to all residents of the Park Place Towers, Clinton Place Apartments, Sunset Manor Apartments, and Holiday Garden Apartments.  The Michigan Department of Community Health will develop and distribute a final fact sheet.
