In the early hours of 1/12/2015, a small tire recycling facility (New River Tire & Recycling) in Pilot Mountain NC became engulfed in flames. Local responders notified the North Carolina Emergecy Operations Center (NCEOC) and the National Response Center (NRC) to request EPA assistance. The NCEOC in turn contacted EPA. New River Tire & Recycling is located on a tributary to Toms Creek, the Pilot Mountain Public Drinking Water Intake is located on Toms Creek, approximately 1 mile downstream. Surry County Emergency Management has made downstream notifications to additional state, local agencies and to Stokes County (an adjacent county) and continue to do so as appropriate. EPA has mobilized OSC Kenneth Rhame and START. For more information contact OSC Kenneth Rhame.
